Remaining Balance: With vs Without Extra Principal

Assumptions: Fixed APR. Regular monthly payment plus optional extra principal (monthly or annual). No new charges. Your total payment must exceed monthly interest or payoff is impossible. Projections are estimates only and not guaranteed returns or financial advice.

How This Calculator Works

Each month interest accrues on the remaining balance and your payment reduces principal. Extra principal is added on top of your regular payment (every month, or once per year). We run two paths — with and without extras — so you can see time and interest saved.

Example

$8,000 at 19% APR paying $300/month may take several years. Adding $50 extra per month usually cuts years and a large share of interest — compare both lines on the chart.

FAQ

What does extra principal do?

It is money beyond your regular payment that goes straight to reducing the balance (after that month’s interest). Paying extra more often usually saves more interest than the same total once a year.

Snowball vs avalanche?

Avalanche targets highest APR first; snowball targets smallest balance. This tool models one debt at a time.

Should I invest instead?

High-APR debt often outweighs expected market returns — compare carefully.
